Painting the mice - science fraud

Found this article from Discover Magazine interesting.

Excerpts:

In 1974 immunologist William Summerlin created a sensation when he claimed to have transplanted tissue from black to white mice. In reality, he used a black felt-tip pen to darken patches of fur on white mice.

Some researchers still use “painting the mice” to describe scientific fraud.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity estimates there are 2,300 cases of misconduct among NIH-funded researchers each year.

A very interesting site Sue. I've put it on favourites, I'd like to read more of it. Some surprising facts and finds.

Summerlin might have been a scientist but he must have been lacking in common sense if he thought no one would notice ...

That's akin to somebody putting a photo of a Jaguar on the front of an old banger and people actually believing that it's a posh Jag!
