Neil Armstrong

It has just been reported that Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, has died at the age of 82.

Neil had very recently undergone surgery to sort out some blocked coronary arteries and it is thought that he died after complications set in from the procedures.

He was commander of the Apollo 11 mission and did his "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" bit from the lunar module, Eagle, on the 20th July 1969. Last year he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

RIP Neil.

Re: Neil Armstrong

Who can forget the Apollo 11 moon landing? It must be a defining moment of any over 50.

I was working as a TO in the PO Tower in London this was a monitor showing the helicopter picking up the module from the Pacific ocean

Sad that 40 years later even the USA could not repeat the moon landing. Even sadder that a legend has just died.

Re: Neil Armstrong

Of course, there will be the non-believers that this ever took place. Over 600 million people watched this back in 1969, and I was one of them.

I am sorry to hear of his death - rest in peace Neil.

One of the great all American heroes in the true sense of the word, and the world will be a poorer place for his passing...

Re: Neil Armstrong

Another great man gone.

Technology moves at a frightening speed. Many of the great pioneers of space travel - Yuri Gagarin, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong to name but a few were born while Orville Wright was still alive.

Rest in peace, Neil.
