The Somme

Like MacAthur, we have returned from our WW1 jaunts.

That is the best way to travel, just pack, plan where and go, no forward booking of hotels just stay where and when you want to.

Our Grand Daughter was in tears for most of the time, as were we, but really enjoyed visiting the graves of our family members, something she says 'she will never forget'.

A few of the photo,s we took which created memories and some real moving moments.

Most of the people we saw at Newfoundland memorial Park had tears in their eyes and handkerchiefs in their hands, it is such image raising place, just to imagine all those soldiers who were in those trenches not knowing if they would see the next day let alone loved ones again.

I got this from the internet as the camera batteries had run flat when we visited here.

If you are ever in France in the Somme region I recommend visiting Newfoundland Memorial Park, it is something that will live with you always.

Politicians should all be made to visit there, if they did there would be no more wars.

These are now, along with others, set out on a DVD to music and on there way to my son and daughter.

Re: The Somme

Very poignant Bob, many thanks for the reminder of what we owe to others for our freedoms which these days are so much taken for granted....

Re: The Somme

Or that the huge losses were NOT all on one side.

As for the British, "Butcher" Haig is credited with much that went wrong. even Churchill, criticised him for his prosecution of the war.

There are no winners in war, just a difference in losses.

True Erinaceous, it is the senseless waste that is so poignant...
