Lord 'Alf' Morris
The Disabled rights pioneer Alf Morris has died at the age of 84.
He grew up in Newton Heath Manchester but originated from Ancoats and he knew from an early age only too well what poverty was really about. He was the Labour MP for Wythenshawe from 1964 to 1997 and became the UK's first minister for the disabled in 1974. His tireless campaign and dedication led to the first disability rights legislation, the 1970's Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act.
Alf was one of the old school Socialists who could always see the argument from both sides and was always seeking justice for all. He took an awful lot of stick from his own party for his ethics none more than for his unwavering support for the sick and injured Gulf War Veterans. Even though the government of the day tried desperately hard to wash their hands of all responsibility for their failings and absolve themselves from further involvement he carried on the fight.
All of us have lost a decent and honest man and we disabled have lost a true knight in shining armour.
RIP Alf and thanks.
