Thank you all. I'm not keen on spiders but this particular type are really beautiful (as long as they stay away from me). We watched her for ages wrapping up that fly, fascinating. Towards the end of summer we see a largish cocoon hanging from the web and last year we saw the baby spiders scuttling out. Once the cocoon is there the big spider just vanishes. These spiders really are huge but I'm not good at spider identification so I don't know what it is.
