Tipping? - bus tours

I tip taxi drivers and tip the drivers that drive you from the lots to the terminals at airports as I know it is expected.

I've taken organized bus tours (to the ball game, theater, shopping to the states, etc) but have never even thought of tipping the driver and/or escort. Last night as I was picking up my daughter & boyfriend as they returned from a bus trip to the zoo (3 hr ride one way), I notice people getting off the bus tipping the driver as they went . I guess I've never noticed on the trips I've been on, but IS this common practice? I feel bad now that I've never given . My daughter even questioned if this was expected as she felt 'put on the spot'. She said that there was no 'escort' or hostess on this trip which there usually is, and the driver even made mention of it on the way there. He popped in a movie on their system (disney as there was a variety of ages on the bus), and provided a safe drive there and back (maybe a little fast as I was surprised that they pulled into the lot 15 mins early).

It is up here, My Daughter and I went over to Orkney a few Weeks ago and while we were there we went on a Day Tour on a Bus. When we were leaving there was a Bowl at the Door and everyone was dropping Pound Coins and fivers into it.

I have been on a few couch trips. If others have put a tip in then I will do the same.

I can remember back in the 60s when people went on a coach trip for a day out and, coming back, somebody would pass a cap round for folk to throw in whatever they could to tip the driver, whilst everybody had a sing-song as well.

I don't tip either and like you not because I'm mean. You are right we have already paid for the services. I would not dream of tipping a bus driver on public transport.
No one ever gave me a tip for doing my job.

No one tips the drivers on public transport buses over here, but hired coaches for weddings, outings, tours etc. someone always passes the hat around.

Why? They are being paid to do a job just like the drivers on pubic transport.

Re: Tipping? - bus tours

Its funny isnt it that I also tip coach drivers abroad when i go on a day trip, but unless someone passes a bowl round in this country i would not dream of doing so, i would feel too embarassed.
I also used to leave a tip in cafes when i went in for lunch or for a coffee mid morning. But now because you pay at a till before you sit down i have stopped tipping is this just how things have moved on without us noticing.
