From a woman's point of view I think it really does depend on how well you know someone.
I would never knowingly offend anyone I didn't know personally, or otherwise, always trying to remain tactful and kind, but I do remember back in the 60s as a teenager when my friend and I went to C&A shopping for clothes.
My friend, at 5ft 8in and was an awkward size, but had the heart of a lion, chose a dress which she tried on. She looked horrendous in it. My response was that it was a nice frock, but I didn't think it looked right on her. She agreed and bought something else which really did look good on her.
