Tiger Sighting

Here are the final shots processed from yesterday's Zoo trip. It was pretty bright & sunny day out, but I got lucky and the tiger decided to settle into his bed of hay, in the partial shade.

Stunning photos! How far back were you, and using what lens?

I've got my 24-70mm F/2.8 aboard. That's why I must crop so much. My Lorikeet parrot shots are the exception. I can get within 2 feet. I was about 70 feet away from this tiger.

Nice! Is ISO 400 your usual for these photos? I'm not up on digital photography but when I shot film I almost always used ISO 100 for portrait work. Is there much difference in quality when you choose 400 over 100 in digital?

400 ISO is my favorite setting if I'm moving, as at the zoo, with the lighting conditions changing. If I'm on a tripod, as for landscapes, I'm always at 100 ISO for the finest grain possible. The D7000 & new D800 are very usable up to 6400 ISO. I crop a lot because of the 24-70mm F/2.8 usually on my D800. If I could find one, I'd love a 28-300mm Nikkor.

When I used to shoot film I loved Tri-X, 400 ASA film.

Thanks. I'm certainly just beginning to learn the camera and new lenses. If I can shoot shots like these from 70 feet away and the cropped finished photos look this good, imagine if I could fill the frame and not have to crop. That will come next as I take out the D800 with my 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6G on a tripod. All I need is dry weather.

I had my Nikon F80 out of the bag a few days ago, wondering about doing film again. I have a 135 mm Nikon Series E and a Nikkor 28-80 that I used a lot.

Found a 70 - 300 Nikkor on Kijiji - a bit far away from you: http://london.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-se...AdIdZ374502747

Anyway - love the tigers, enjoy all your pics - keep shooting and keep posting!
