Rhododendron

I hope I'm right in identifying this flower. I count on you all to correct me if wrong. I was walking the paths of the zoo when I spotted these bushes full of beautiful blossoms. The color is intense as they appear at their peak health. There's so much more to capture at the zoo than just the wild animals.

I was just corrected on the name of these flowers. They are Azalias. I'd be grateful if a moderator might change the title of this post.

Re: Rhododendron

Simply beautiful That is definitely a rhododendron. Azaleas are the smaller variety.

Nope, I actually didn't know. I just looked up the two varieties and the determining difference is said to be that Azalias are smaller and single blossoms where Rhododendron are clusters.

Re: Rhododendron

Beautiful photo Bob and I also think it is a rhododendron. Azaelias and rhododendrons are the same family and many azaelias (but not all) are deciduous. The best way to tell the difference between them is that rhododendrons. have ten stamens and azaelias have five.

Re: Rhododendron

A glorious flower indeed at this time of year. As a matter of fact we are planning to visit Newstead Abbey tomorrow (home of Lord Byron the poet), to see the annual rhododendron flowering display, which must be one of the finest in all England..
