A New Old Thread

I spotted this a couple of hours ago and hope nobody minds my resurrecting it.

It's about surnames and I'd like to stress that people really shouldn't put their last names online, but I found it most interesting.

My maiden surname is also in the Domesday Book in 1086, but my married surname has never been researched.

This thread was put on a couple of years ago, so have a toot at the link. It's very interesting.

Re: A New Old Thread

This is what mine says:

This ancient English and Scottish surname was rarely recorded and never as a surname, before the Norman Invasion of 1066. Its popularity dates from the 12th century when returning Crusaders from the Holy Land gave it to one of their sons in commemoration of the fathers expedition. The derivation is from the Hebrew male given name ....... meaning "gift of the Lord".

There are variations of the spelling though.
