Onions

Did you know that the reason why people shed tears on peeling and chopping onions is because an onion emits sulphuric acid?

Personally, I never get that stinging sensation when chopping onions but that's probably because I'm so used to it that Im anaesthetised to it!

Just a bit of useless information.

Re: Onions

Back in the days of..blah blah lol my nan used to hold a teaspoon in her mouth and not take it out till the onion was chopped! I have also done this for years & I can assure you it works. Mind you nan used to smoke a ciggy without taking it out her mouth when gutting. Rabbit to stop the smell going up her nose lol she never let the ash drop fortunately lol I neither smoke nor have a problem gutting rabbit or rat which is much pongyier lol ..sorry for the deviation Mollie

Re: Onions

I don't have any problems with tears when slicing onions and have my own way of peeling them leaving the root intact until the last moment.
I slice the onion in half from top to bottom,
..then peel the skin back from the top leaving it attached to the root, the pulled back skin forms a kind of handle which can be held on to while I slice the onion . When I reach the bottom the skin and root can then be discarded in one

Totally agree!!!!

In my opinion onions is the one ingredient I could not manage without. They are the basic ingredient in soups and sauces, salads & sandwiches - and ofcourse in the wok.

And as Mollie says - when you use them often enough there is no problem with shedding tears.

In my country I have heard a burning candle by your side will help. I have never tried it though.

If you wear contact lenses you never have a problem as whatever causes it can't pass behind the lense

Val darlin' I don't think that is true. What makes people 'cry' when peeling and chopping onions is the 'smell' that the onions exude. That in turn triggers the tear duct and the nasal orifice to produce fluid, hence you not only 'cry' but have a runny nose too.
