Re: No Deal with Norway

This is from the Telegraph:

"Whitehall sources argued that the UK had put forward “very reasonable” proposals, which would have ensured that Norway continued to benefit from access to UK waters and exchange of fishing quotas.

It requested in return that Norway paid for access to UK waters to help correct what ministers believed to be an “imbalance” in previous EU agreements, which saw Norway catch eight times the amount of fish in UK waters as British fishermen did in its waters.

They pointed out that in 2019 the UK fished netted just £31 million in Norwegian waters, while Norway landed £249m worth in UK waters.

The UK has also agreed access to 5,500 tonnes of fish in the waters around Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, under a separate deal with the authorities in Norway, as well as shares for cod in these waters with the EU through the Brexit trade deal."

"A Defra spokesperson said: “We have always been clear that we will only strike agreements if they benefit the entire UK fishing industry."

So it looks very much like DEFRA wouldn't cave in to Norwegian demands, which strikes me as being fair enough.
Personally I would rather we stand our ground and seek fair deals than just roll over and submit.

Yes it's The Telegraph but if you can't read the link then surely the bits I've posted will give you the idea.

Oh, and another thing: Over 90% of the cod eaten in the UK is imported, mainly from Iceland and then ........... China!

"The UK consumes 115,000 tonnes of cod every year.[vi] Surprisingly, this cod does not typically originate from UK waters. The UK is one of the most significant importers of cod in the world – by species, cod imports were the second highest in terms of total value of all the species imported into the UK in 2019 – 21.8% of total imports by value – second only to salmon at 23.0% of seafood imports.

Britain’s cod supply is mainly sourced from Iceland (27.1% of the total), China (21.6%), and the EU 27 (20.2%). In 2019, the UK imported 105,000 tonnes of cod, valued at £572 million ($743 million) and equivalent to 91% of UK cod consumption.[vii]

British cod, landed at UK ports, is primarily exported to Ireland – 50.7% of the total in 2019 – France (15.8%) and Spain (7.9%)."

I've been telling you this for months - it's because we do not have the species quotas. Those belong to the EU in perpetuity as part of the big Brexit sellout

Tear up the TCA !

From what you say Bread, do l take it that the EU still own all the
quota's for cod fished in our supposedly own waters??
If so l find it very hard to believe we would ever sign up to that ??
AND IN PERPETUITY #%?!**!!
The DEFRA decision l agree with going by the figures supplied ?
But it has become apparent that shared waters do not work imo?
Each to their own seems to be the only way due to the
shenanigans that fisher folk get up to themselves, especially the
corporations !!

We should control all our waters and drastically increase no take zones and conservation areas. This would be a massive improvement to sustainability.

Ban super trawlers completely.

Put CCTV (REM) on ALL fishing vessels and make it a legal requirement to have cameras running while the boat is at sea with cameras on the deck area and hold areas as a minimum. GPS mandatory as well for all boats

All fishing vessels must return to a UK Port for processing

Fishing based on number of days at sea with licenses issued from UK Ports and revenues remaining with the port authority

Introduce a recreational sea fishing license so no take MCZ can be legally enforced

Those would be the main things we should do, the fisheries arrangements with the EU are appalling

Saying things even many times does not make them correct.

"The fact is that UK consumers love fish that is caught outside our own waters – like the haddock and cod that come from 1,000 miles away in the Barents Sea."

It explains much that all Bread's emotional diatribes upon fishing can never reasonably refute and it's from the UK's fishing industry itself.
Which, if we all want to be perfectly honest, is a far more reputable source for the facts than either myself or Bread.
