Seven Cornwall furniture craftsmen to design tables for G7 Summit

Seven furniture makers from Cornwall have been tasked with designing the table that will be used when world leaders meet for the G7 Summit in June.

The seven designers and artisans were asked by the Government to submit designs for sustainable, symbolic meeting tables which will be used by world leaders at the G7 Summit in Carbis Bay as a way to showcase Cornwall’s skilled craftsmen and women.

The Prime Minister’s Office will choose the final design which will be used for group and one-to-one meetings between the leaders across the Summit and profiled in press pictures and media footage shown right around the world.

Kim Conchie, chief executive of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, said: “A powerhouse for green innovation, Cornwall provides an ideal setting for the G7 Summit and I’m delighted that the eyes of the world will be on our beautiful, historic and innovative area.

“It’s important for the whole region to reap the benefits from hosting the event and that’s why I’m delighted that the Government will be using local suppliers where they can and why the tables used for the talks will be designed and built in Cornwall, celebrating local craftsmanship.

“I’m pleased that we can give a global platform to the best of Cornish talent and it’s a great opportunity for designs to be showcased in meetings which will help set the agenda between the most powerful democracies on earth. Good luck to all the designers.”

Handcrafted tables for a summit which could be held on a laptop. Why couldn't they ordered them from Ikea?

It makes a change from the usual Tory government policy of straight-to-crony so I'm delighted that Cornish businesses are being given an opportunity to participate .....

Well first because highlighting Ikea stuff isn't exactly promoting British craftsmanship ....................... and second because Ikea's stuff is still in transit after being stuck on a ship that itself got stuck in some canal.

Element osmium
At the modest temperatures and pressures of Earth's surface, the densest known material is the metallic element osmium, which packs 22 grams into 1 cubic centimetre, or more than 100 grams into a teaspoonful. Even osmium is full of fluff, however, in the form of electron clouds that separate the dense atomic nuclei.
from here

Obviously, they've never tried to lift a box containing an IKEA flatpack desk
