Covid-19: Miami Beach imposes emergency curfew over spring break 'chaos'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56476904

A state of emergency has been declared in the US city of Miami Beach over concerns large crowds gathering for spring break pose a coronavirus risk. A 20:00-06:00 curfew has been announced in the island city that will remain in effect until at least 12 April. Traffic restrictions are in place during the curfew, while businesses in the busy South Beach area must close.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said thousands of tourists had brought "chaos and disorder" to the city. "It feels like a rock concert, wall-to-wall people over blocks and blocks," Mr Gelber told CNN. "If you're coming here to go crazy, go somewhere else."

Spring break is a holiday period for schools and universities in the US that usually takes place in March or April. It attracts thousands of students to Florida and other warm-weather destinations around the country.

Officials warned tourists to "vacation responsibly or be arrested" prior to the holiday period, and a county-wide midnight coronavirus curfew was already in place due to the pandemic. But the Miami Beach area was thronged with revellers over the weekend, and many did not appear to be wearing masks or socially distancing.

Florida continues to be a coronavirus hotspot in the US. The state has recorded nearly two million of the country's 29 million infections since the pandemic began.

The latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows Florida has recorded about 4,300 new infections a day on average over the past week.

Living in a beach community that was trending towards becoming a spring break hotspot. We solved the problem very, very easily after having one bad year.

We did the most HORRIBLE thing of all.

We made it a family destination.

Every promotion advertised the area as a welcome place for families, every store put out "Welcome Families" signs, we established family outdoor activities on the beaches (sand castle competitions, offered family movies on outdoor screens on the beach each night) and gave away free pails and shovels to the little ones.

We made it SO wholesome and nerdy that the college kids were repulsed, fearing their cool reputations would be damaged - forever if their friends found out they came here .

You can't have it both ways, a strong economy with flourishing businesses, or covid restrictions....

I doubt they will catch covid outside, and even if they do, they look mostly young people and will hardly know they've had it.

If you are worried, old or have a weak immune system just stay away, I do! In a free country we have no right to stop people from going out. Not even the authorities have that right...

Having a "free" country relies on the people who live in it behaving in ways that do not endanger the health and wellbeing of others who also live there.

To allow a minority to run roughshod over agreed rules/laws is to allow the majority to be controlled by the minority. This isn't conducive to the concept of "freedom".

They are not running roughshod over the majority Dex, nor are they endangering the health of others. They are not forcing you to join them, stay away from the crowds if you are concerned about your own health just like I do, they just have a different opinion of what is good for society, and I think they are right!.

There will be more deaths, poverty and ruined lives from the constant lockdowns than there will ever be from covid. And the worst part is.....When all the lockdowns and rules are relaxed, covid will return......You will be living in a police state and a constant return to lockdown, and unable to leave your house....

Their actions have led to a curfew, which will affect the freedom of those who live there. They will have exposed themselves to having a greater chance of infection which they will take away with them, and which may affect others adversely in many ways. I need hardly remind you OGF that the "freedom" of the entire planet has been significantly damaged by the actions of a tiny number of people who exercised their own freedom to capture and sell infected animals.
