Inverse Applications

Reading a post on another thread, I was reminded of a claim made several years ago that the electricity used by leaving appliances on standby was the same as that used to power Basildon.

It occurred to me back then that if we could persuade Basildon not to use any electricity, then the rest of us needn't worry about leaving our stuff on standby.

Have any of you had any similarly related inverse logic thoughts?

Re: Inverse Applications

Not quite inverse logic but I think that they should move the change to British Summertime to friday at 4pm instead of Sunday morning.

Re: Inverse Applications

To solve your power problems if John Betjeman had written about Basildon rather than Slough perhaps there would have been enough power left over to power your electric cars too?

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.

It's not good enough that they want you to save energy because you have to pay the exorbitant prices that they charge for it, but they have to make you feel guilty about using it too...

It sounds like he was on a proper downer when he wrote that Bruce....

I used to live there. For 6 years we stuck it out before moving to Devon. I didn't like it at all, but it wasn't all horrible, some neighbours were nice.

My sole visit was to the station. Took the wrong train from Ealing Broadway, which didn't stop at West Ealing after all.

I used to work in West Ealing & my Dad was bank manager for the National Westminster bank there. I worked for Singer Sewing machines in their shop. I remember one foggy evening after work, going up to the bank to get a lift home, Dad had his car. Most of the way home I was either hanging out of the window keeping the curb in view, or walking in front of the car because the fog was so thick we couldn't see a hand in front of our faces. It was horrible, so very glad when we moved.

Re: Inverse Applications

Wait for the stones to fall on my head ....

Many women ran their houses, cared for the children and often found time to play with them .

Then women went to work outside the home and earned money to help to pay for expensive appliances, 'ready meals',transport and entertainment for children so filling the needs created by going out to work.

Fine is women wanted to work outside the home but I think not all did but were pressured into it by what became 'the norm' and 'keeping up with the Joneses'.

.....runs from the feminists
