The ‘Glottal Stop’?

Would you know what l meant if l talked about the ‘glottal stop’?

I had never heard of it until recently. Had you?

Yes - it was beaten (formerly "bea'en") out of council estate "oiks" (like me) at public school .....

Never heard of it ...must be a southern thing

I just googled it....used in phonetics a momentary stop in the air stream. Well there you go I learn something new every day

Yes - we learned about it at Grammar School - in our elocution lessons. A few pupils had problems with it - it was considered to be very sloppy speech - not sure if anyone bothers to correct it these days.

I don't think it is/was confined to the South.
