250 Years Ago Today

Captain Cook landed in Botany Bay on this day, 29th April, in 1770.

Due to Covid 19 the commemorative circumnavigation of Australia by the replica Endeavour has been cancelled saving $50Million. It was also the wrong explorer. Australia was circumnavigated by Flinders.

Cook opened fire on the locals every time he landed despite being instructed to negotiate and make friends with the locals.

Cook sailed with orders to take possession of new territories in the name of the king of Great Britain "with the consent of the natives".

But he certainly did not have the consent of Indigenous people when he claimed New South Wales for the king, while landed on what he called Possession Island at the tip of Cape York, on August 22, 1770.

Until, of course, he was killed in Hawaii.

Anyway, it's curious that this thread was posted so close to the Happy Birthday Tessa one. For a moment I thought it was a duplicate

The accuracy of history depends on who wrote about it.

Usually the victorious, not the victims.

Discovered it first??? Ha Ha what a joke, The Aboriginals had been here for 40000 years when he turned up so he was a bit of a late comer.

The Dutchman Janszoon rolled up in 1606, then in 1688 Dampier came across the peninsular that bears his name.

The French were also hanging about, there is a Sydney suburb called La Perouse after the French explorer who arrived in 1788 a few days after the First Fleet
