Should Boxing and other risky sports be banned.

Should Boxing be Banned ?

The World Medical Association believes it should.

More than a few fatalities have been caused in the ring, and how many have suffered chronic brain injury from participating in this sport ?

And what about Rugby ?

Do you think these sports should be banned, or a change in rules, but what changes could be made that’ll make these sports safer….. without destroying these sports.

Currently Boxing is well regulated and as safe as it can be.
Banning it will simply force it underground with illegal prize fights, no regulations or restrictions and no legitimate doctors involved.

It absolutely should be banned.

I agree, but banning it would close the gyms, thus stopping the youngsters from sparring 3 nights a week.

The illegal bouts still go on without a ban.

I'm not sure I agree 100% with you Todger. The pro boxers could wear head gear like the amateurs do which would give them some protection against head injuries.

Just watch a few of the Traveller TV programmes to see those.

What about rugby then ?

These past years the game has changed so much, its faster and more intense.

Plus nowadays we 20 stone plus Polynesians ripped with muscle and can do 100m in under 12 seconds.

And lets not forget them other power houses that can be even bigger, faster and stronger, that'll clear out rucks, tackle, maul, scrummage and rip out, using all their physical attributes and aggression to win.

Lets be fair, a few people have end up with life changing injuries.

Heading the ball in football is blamed for a large number of former players diagnosed with alzheimers and dementia. Heading the ball has been banned in primary school football. The new footballs are a lot lighter than the old leather ones, especially on a wet day.

Didn't realise the education authorities had done that, I agree youngsters should be protected from what they won't understand.

Yes heading a wet muddy ball..... I can remember doing that, and was good at it to. Mind them were the days no one knew anything about it.

When I was at school - and beyond - anyone who was a bit of a window licker or just a bit odd was usually referred to as a "head-the-ball"

Back to boxing. Hitting an opponent especially around the head with the intention to cause him to become disoriented or unconscious is just plain bloody stupid. Rugby almost as bad because of the risk as opposed to the intent.

Never heard of anyone calling or being called " Head the Ball ", and I attended a school with lots of other oddballs, guess what you would call " window lickers "

Did/was calling someone "head the Ball" come about because of the risk of dementia and other Brian related injuries ?

You make a good point about Boxing, don't think anyone can argue that the sport is quite barbaric when you think about it
