elderly

Why are the media persistent in calling anyone over 60 'elderly'? i.e. an elderly woman aged 60 was knocked down today, an elderly man aged 60 was mugged today etc etc. I thought that 60 was the new 40 If 60ish is considered elderly, then what word can they use for people over 80?

Re: elderly

I really don't care what people call me old, crotchety, over 60, it's all the same to me
I don't feel 'the new 40 though', nearer 90

Re: elderly

I have to be honest with myself Meg25, when I was young everybody over 30 was old to me, anyone over 60 was ancient, anyone over that I never thought could still function.
Now that I'm 65 and still in good health I do consider myself old or elderly, so it's a fact and I'm happy with that and I don't mind in the least what younger people care to call it, if they are lucky they might reach my age someday.

Re: elderly

I know many people in their 60s who have a much younger attitude to life than a lot of people in their 40s.

Re: elderly

How unnerving... I'll suddenly wake up elderly on Nov. 9, 2013!

When my sister was 19 and I was 28 she lived with us while attending university. She came home one day and remarked that a 'middle-aged' woman was studying veterinary medicine with her.

I asked how old?

"Oh, at least 30!" she replied.

I waited 11 years to give her a birthday card that I signed with "WELCOME TO MIDDLE AGE!"

I don't care what people call me, I don't feel my age and according to my son, I don't act it at times!
