Re: To fit a powerchair and hoist in back
What we've always done is choose a car and then ask the conversion specialists if they are able to carry out the modifications required to that particular vehicle.
It's not always possible to get quite the car you want because not all will be suitable for conversion. However, I've always found it surprising just what can be done to convert most cars for individual needs.
Generally speaking, a hatchback is much better for getting the chair into the back of a car using an electric hoist. Wheelchairs will still need the back folding down to fit them into the back of hatchbacks.
These days, we use a converted car where the wheelchair user can drive the chair up a ramp and stay in the chair while travelling as a passenger.
We know someone who's power wheelchair actually clipped in to where the drivers seat used to be and he could therefore drive the car from the chair. This was a large Mercedes ..around the size of a Transit van. Definitely an up-market vehicle and conversion.
