I don't know whether any of you are aware of these things. I wasn't until yesterday when a local animal rescue charity posted these pictures on Facebook.
Apparently, these things are NOT illegal for general sale. Animals of all sorts (as shown in the pictures) are liable to fall victim. They become attached to the glue strips and, in their desperation to escape, can dislocate or break limbs (and wings). Eventually, of course, they die and in a horrible and no doubt painful way.
These are incredibly cruel things that I chose not to mention on the "giving gulls laxatives" thread. IMO they are in the same class as gin traps. Using adhesive to capture things is not uncommon though.
Birdlime (no, not the stuff that comes out of the blunt end of a bird - Google it) is used especially but not exclusively in France to capture migratory birds for the table.
Have to be honest here....i did think they were illegal ! I havent see these about for many many years, well since i was a child and people did use them (sadly).
I am absolutely horrified, they are barbaric & archaic.
