The shovel was invented by Sir Broken Back of Dig. The first shovels were made from ox scapula (shoulder blades). They were made during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, about 5,000 years ago, in Britain.
Of course there are shovels and then there are spades, but in these PC times I am not sure you can call a spade a spade anymore, so perhaps now we have only shovels?
