Just trying to bring the flowers away from the background without loss of clarity

Oh well back to the drawing board.

Well it's sort of working. The flowers do appear slightly forward of the foliage.

Sorry to hijack your thread Realspeed.

Thanks for the video Bruce. I've just been playing with a pic I took last week in a Lisbon cafe with pocket camera on full zoom, 100mm (35mm equivalent). #1 is SOOC, #2 a crop, obviously, then using the two layers technique as in the video, I've boosted & sharpened the top layer, desaturated & defocused the bottom layer. Then ran a soft edged eraser around the subject.
