Horizon - tonight

The lovely Dr. Michael Mosely is doing a documentary tonight - BBC 2 - 9pm which should be interesting.

It is called "The Placebo Effect - Can My Brain Cure My Body?"

I like that man, and I like how he explains things so well.

This one is about Britain's largest ever trial to investigate the placebo effect, and whether the power of fake pills could be used to treat some of our most common medical complaints.

Re: Horizon - tonight

Yes, I saw a bit of this on TV this morning and it was very interesting. Most interesting was that those who had benefited from taking the placebos chose to continue taking them, even though they were aware they had no effect. Apparently, a few of them got the 'ump when they realised they had been conned.

Yes, I put that on to record and am looking forward to watching it.

I'm not particularly enamoured of Mosely though!

I do like Michael Mosely

Homoeopathy and glucosamine came under his scrutiny in a placebo related programme a few years ago .

Some people actively encourage it by taking hard drugs!

Don't suppose you can recall the gist of his verdict on homeopathy can you Meg?

Re: Horizon - tonight

I watched most of this last night. It was very interesting, but what surprised me was the number people who happily decided to keep taking the placebo and saying it did them good, in spite of being told it was a placebo. I would have thought that once people knew it would have ruined any effect it had. I can't really understand that.
