The origins of dogs

Very interesting program tonight on Nat Wild, the Bulldog was highlighted as the most deformed breed, the messing about all started about 100 years ago and the pictures the guy had of Bulldogs at that time were totally different from today's breed, today the skull is deformed the shoulders are exaggerated the hips are too narrow and the legs are totally useless compared to the original breed.

It's so bad said the guy that most litters have to be delivered by section because of the narrow pelvis, he went on to say that this could all be reversed, . . . don't hold your breath waiting folks.

Pekes are fortunate to be with us, the royal emperors of China were the only ones allowed to keep them and when the European armies at the time of the boxer uprising entered the forbidden city all the pekes were put to death, all save 5 which were taken back to the UK and presented to queen Victoria.

Terriers were also mentioned, both guys were concerned as a lot of owners don't know what type of dogs they have regarding their nature, according to them all terriers are killing machines, this is what they were bred for but because they're small and don't cost too much to feed they've become very popular.

Breeders go for what wins in he shows. It's not quite so bad with cats, but look at today's Siamese compared to 30 years ago; and the excessively flat-faced Persians with breathing problems .... very sad.

Totally agree with you Moli. Saw a programme on TV not too long ago about how breeds have changed-it included Bulldogs, German Shepherds and Cavalier King Charles. Was an interesting programme but just can't remember what it was called.

Re: The origins of dogs

Personally I'm disgusted at what breeders are being allowed to do with some breeds. A lot of breeds bear little resemblance to how they were originally which a great shame, with some breeds being totally spoiled. Being a fan of GSDs I'm appalled at what they've done to them, and the problems they suffer from as a result of bad breeding.

As for terriers being classed as 'killing machines', I think what they could have meant was that in times of yore terriers were originally bred for use as hunting out small animals as a source of food when people lived more 'off of the land', and didn't have supermarkets to pop into to buy meat.
