The old Brits dreams of retirement

Once many eons ago in the world of post war britain there seemed to be a dream of a retirement if possible of a cottage by the seaside [british seaside that is] I have seen those cottages on my travels along the coastline of UK - all neat gardens and outdoor shades to shade from the sinking evening sun.

I do realize that some now want a retirement option on the continent - brexit or no brexit - BUT does the old dream still exist or no longer - be brutal I can take it!!

Of course it does. In theory, I would love to live in an old cottage by the sea but unfortunately many of them seem to be falling into it. That combined with all the anti-social problems is making the dream more difficult.

Yes, falling apart in every sense of the word is Blighty.

Tbh, if I we won the lottery we would probably move to another Country. I'm sure they would have the similar problems but it's not so bad in a foreign language.

coast is quiet I meant - I have spent many happy hrs on the coast with the kids and a tent - OMG - it's all gawn!!

I have a book here The KIngdom by the Sea by paul Theroux in which he walks; rails and buses his way around the entire coast of england and scotland at least but that was in the 80's and just when I was leaving.

Not all of it, I suppose there will always be a coast until we disappear.

Yes, I have seen that. It's presented by that long haired Scottish guy, it seems to start in Scotland, whizzes around the rest of the British Isles in the blink of an eye, then ends in Scotland.

Re: The old Brits dreams of retirement

Having always lived next to the sea albeit in different parts of the country we'd never consider moving in land. And for us location really is everything, much rather forego the big house for a smaller one overlooking the sea oh and of course the roses round the porch
