Puppy Guide dog

We board puppy guide dogs for the blind , here's the one we just got today her name is Doris 6 wks old a cross la/ retriever we will now keep her till she is 12 months old , then hand her back for her more advanced training ,

this is our 4th puppy but we have looked after the older dogs that were 18 months old , waiting to be placed we have had 18 of those , been doing this for the last 7 yrs all voluntary

Re: Puppy Guide dog

Congratulations on your work Jon, you and yours should be very proud.
It must be very rewarding to see them through the first stages of their training but I would think also rather sad to see them go.

Well done indeed.

What a wonderful and worthwhile thing to do, Jon.

Do you name the pup yourselves or do they already have names when they come to you?

I agree with Hammer when he said it could be rather sad when it's time to let them go to the next stage in their training.

That little pup looks such a cutie!

Re: Puppy Guide dog

Thats great Jon - what a lovely job - are you what is known as a puppy walker? I went down to Warwickshire to the guide dog centre a while ago. It was so interesting and I seriously thought about being a puppy walker once I retired, but having two flatcoats, I didn't feel I could commit at that time. I understand they breed their own strains of labrador x golden retrievers which make successful guide dogs. Will you keep us all posted (with pics. if possible) - I am sure I am not the only one who would love to hear how Doris progresses.

Doris is gorgeous Jon. I have great admiration for you and all the others who look after the puppy guide dogs. Its something I couldn't do personally-wouldn't be able to let them go!
