Nowt as queer as folk I suppose..

It has been a glorious day today
After swimming today I met friends for drinks (mostly soft!) in a beautiful pub garden which has panoramic views and wildlife in abundance.

After about 20 minutes of being there I noticed that over half of the people at the tables were glued to their phone screens. Even the couples, older ones too seemed perfectly happy to be posting "about" their lives on a screen rather than actually living in that glorious afternoon and chatting with actual friends/partners

Don't get me wrong
I'm on my phone right now as I watch tv AND socialise but seriously...in a garden...in the sunshine.. Why would you want to tell your virtual friends anything that couldn't wait until you got home?

There's a poem's words coming to me here...

Ah got it!

Leisure
William Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare

It's everywhere. In a doctor's surgery at 3 this afternoon I counted everyone (around 20 people) apart from one gentleman on their phone doing something, social media mostly, I venture, but a few like me who were reading the news or books.

I remember being in a pub a while back (I hope I haven't already told this tale) and there were two couple sat opposite us, I was astounded because not one of them talked to each other, all four people were texting and looking at their phones, it was terribly sad to see, I couldn't believe it.

It's when they're doing it out in the street I start worrying for them.

I have to admit I'm guilty of doing that in a doctors surgery because its so awkward how they have the seating, they have rows of chairs facing each other and no one seems to know where to look because if you look at them they might think you are staring at them LOL. I'd rather they put the seating all one way.

Re: Nowt as queer as folk I suppose..

It's a sad world we live in, too many new fangle gadgets to occupy peoples minds. I only use mine to text or phone my friends and close family when i need to, not every moment of the day like so many people do. I don't even use Wifi on it when i'm out.. I find it ignorant.

Young Mother's with their young children walking behind them, whilst mummy's in another world on her phone texting one and all...

Its amazing how many are texting as they are walking, many times I've had to move out of the way as they don't see me, I personally don't text as I'm walking and I don't answer my phone if it rings when I'm walking either because I don't like other people hearing my conversations

No you haven't said that before LQs
And yes that's very sad..
They probably would have communicated more if they had stayed at home and messaged each other about the takeaway they'd eaten!

I remember laughing at the film Wall-e when it first came out
But I'm actually scared for the future for our children now

A couple of weeks ago I put two kids in year 7 in detention because of the reason they gave for not doing a simple homework task
They said "I was too busy"
So I genuinely gave them the benefit and asked what had been the problem
And they both said "I was playing on Fortnight (a new XBOX game)!
I went uncharacteristically nuts!
