I guess the flute was used to gauge reaction during the surgery.

I listened to a programme on the radio the other day where a Scottish vet had brain surgery to remove a tumor. He was anesthetized during the initial stages of the operation but awake during the procedure to remove the tumor so when asked to carry out various tasks his reaction could be monitored to achieve the optimum result.
