Re: The Grand National.
As a retired Bookmaker, I can honestly say that I never had a bad National.
Punters never failed to amaze me, I had quite a number of shops, punters would not bother to pick up money due for, non-runners, National abandoned so stakes returned and not claimed. Winnings of up to hundreds of pounds not claimed, I was asked a lucky punter why they had not picked up his winnings, his response was he was to embarrassed as he had lost his ticket, yes we paid him all we wanted for security reasons was for him to make a new copy and sign it.
Most punters put off picking up returns as they just cannot be bothered for a few quid. This alone would make me thousands.
When I was about 5yo I placed my one and only bet, it was on OXO in 1959 which won at 8/1.
A bookmaker, with his shop underneath a hotel with a casino attached, lost heavily, when on the day of the national a Wedding took place in the Hotel and the party wore kilts. The Wedding Party bet heavily on Highland Wedding (1969) won at 100/9. I hope he laid some of it off.
