Why dont they listen

Why dont Drs/Nurses listen when you tell them some thing? For quite a while nowI Ive had problems with my breathing, especially after exertion,Ive been in Hospital several times and told Drs this. Today my nurse came and after listening to my chest he asked me to do some exertion,,so I went upstairs and back down again. Surprise, surprise" You are very wheezy after that exertion" What have I been telling them all this time

I sense your frustration. Hopefully now they will start to listen to you.

Sounds like a daft question, but, did you ask him what was going to happen next?

Did he suggest any follow up?

Re: Why dont they listen

Before you go to the doctor, do a bit of research. Google is your friend, and there is a very good NHS site.

I'm sure that doctors don't like patients coming up with their own ideas, but tough, at least they know not to try and fob you off!

Re: Why dont they listen

They are just GPs so have no idea, unless it is their specialized subject.
Shout at them next time.

I have no problems with my GP she always listens. If she thinks there is a problem she refers me to a specialist, never, ever fobs me off.

Yes, to be fair, I've never experienced anything like that from my GPs either.

Re: Why dont they listen

Sometimes health practitioners read better than they listen.

You might try writing down your complaints and handing them to the doctor in order of concern, if you fee like you aren't being heard.

I know you are having a tough go of it Deylon. Good thoughts your way.

Re: Why dont they listen

You have to be pretty assertive and persistent to get a result. Some people aren't so good at advocating for themselves when they are not feeling well. I know that when I've been feeling really rough it's not easy to communicate exactly how you feel. So what is useful is if you can find a friend who can help you explain what you are feeling and going through. I haven't had this but I have done it for other people and helped them get the right treatment.

It's not that medics do this deliberately, they are just under a lot of pressure and it must be really difficult to extract what's really happening sometimes because sick people find it hard to explain how they feel.

Reminds me of, what was it that Spike Milligan said....
Something like ......"I kept telling them i was sick, now will you believe me"
