I think it's something to do with the fuel pump freezing (it's slowly coming back to me).
I remember a few years back, my diesel would not start after a very cold night. I had to call for breakdown assistance. The mechanic said 'help me turn it around so that it's facing down hill and it might start'. So we turned it around and it started first time. I always parked it down hill after that and never had a problem.
Having said all that, whether it's your glow plugs or not, I have no idea.
