Rats.

I've seen a large rat at the bottom of the garden - and where there's one, there's likely to be more!

What do I do? Trap - poison?

Re: Rats.

I tend to be a bit tolerant if it's just one or two at bottom of garden, it's only if they come in I worry about them. Best thing I find is keep around your home unfriendly to them, no food no bedding etc make them think you aren't the best place to head for.

Call the Council's environmental health officers, they will lay traps with warfarin in them.

Re: Rats.

I have just got rid of mine!

There were holes in around my chicken coop. I kept filling them in but the rats only dug more!

I rang my local council, it’s still free here but some councils have started to charge.

The pest control man visited weekly putting boxes of bait down.
He told me they were coming for the apples around my Apple trees!

All ok now!

Re: Rats.

Our council have an online booking service.

I was shocked when I saw how much they were going to charge me!! £60 for the first visit and £25 every following visit.

I'm not willing to pay that so it looks like I'll have to do it myself.

Any advice appreciated.

The trouble with poison is, it kills indiscrimately, not just the rats.

Carol, have a search because Muddy did a thread on this recently, and she sorted her problem out with a human trap.

Hold on, just found it for you Carol.-

Re: Rats.

I've had to stop feeding the birds due to it encouraging rats. It's such a shame and I feel really guilty when the birds all line up in the morning but rats just freak me out. I bought a supposedly rat proof feeder but still found piles of seeds that had fallen out onto the floor.

How much? I think that’s awful!
Rats multiply very quickly and they can cause disease.

I was scared that l would get Weil’s Disease from the rats urine but the pest control man said, the urine was only dangerous above a certain temperature.
