Shocked!

A family member (93) collapsed one evening last week. The Paramedics decided he needed to go to hospital due to his longstanding heart problems. The family were told that he would be kept overnight for observation.

At 2.30 a.m they had a telephone call to tell them that he was ready for discharge and to come and collect him. His son did this (I would have refused, had it been me) and on arrival back at his flat - he lives alone, it was discovered that he still had a cannula in his arm! This was removed the following day by a local nurse.

I had an uncle a few years ago who was also discharged, by ambulance, in the middle of the night.

I know the NHS is in crisis, but this is no way to treat the frail elderly IMO.

Re: Shocked!

Dreadful isn't it ,he should have been given a bed for the night then a complete check before leaving in the morning . My nurse friend tells me it's about moving them in and out as fast as possible due to hospital politics

Re: Shocked!

They probably needed the bed, i agree it no way to treat anyone regardless of their age but its another sign of the state of the NHS right now.

Re: Shocked!

Standard procedure now, problem made worse when poor souls end up back in hospital within 24 hours.

Re: Shocked!

It's awful how they discharge people when my husband had a stroke they discharged him at 10pm didn't tell me until I rang to see how he was next day. He hadn't arrived home the police found him midday wandering along a road miles from home. He had no idea when he left the hospital what his address was so why did they send him home without even getting him a taxi or calling me ?

Re: Shocked!

Exactly the same happened with my Mum once, CeeCee.
She also arrived home with a canula still in her arm too.
I had to get a Nurse to come and remove it for her.

Re: Shocked!

I think it's disgusting the way they treat patients, whatever their age, and wonder how they'd feel if it was themselves, or their own dear relative!

Sadly no-one seems to care anymore.

Re: Shocked!

Its a disgrace Cee Cee, but fairly typical of todays climate. I fear it will get worse.

Re: Shocked!

They did this to a friend of mine who was only in her 40s. I removed the canula myself.

Re: Shocked!

I don't understand why anyone is being discharged in the middle of the night It seems very strange thing to do..
