Can you remember shopping through catalogues?

Great phone-book sized ones where you would select what you wanted and either phoned or wrote to them with your order.

I seem to remember they were mostly buy now and pay later in installments.

Still do, but I order on line instead of by phone or postal form. I still like browsing the catalogue though.

Never worked out why the payment term choice, was 20 or 38 weeks, can understand the 20, but not the 38.

Also, they were a good reference point for young lads to learn about the female anatomy.

What did that involve? Did you collect payments from people?

Re: Can you remember shopping through catalogues?

I loved getting the catalogues. I have an old 1923 catalogue from Eaton's...which of course, has closed down here now.

Life was nice back then, but I guess it is better today with all our new technology...

Re: Can you remember shopping through catalogues?

My Dad used to run a catalogue for Empire Stores back in the 50s, I understand he took it over when my Mother died in 1950. I can remember him going to collect the money from people on Saturdays. He got paid a commision which helped supplement his wage, there were no 'benefits' in those days to help widowers with small children.
