Buying Acid.

I have just seen that a lot of the High street giants are throwing their weight against the Government pledge to stop the sales of acids.

It says that some of our biggest retailers have vowed not to sell corrosive liquids to under 18's since there has been such a sharp rise in these acid attacks.

So far, Waitrose, B & Q, Morrisons, Wickes, Co-op, Screwfix and Tesco are among the big firms signing up to voluntary commitments which are to be published by the Government.
The British Independent Retailers Assoc. is encouraging all it's members to sign up.

I daresay criminals will still manage to get their supplies elsewhere, but at least it's a start.

Re: Buying Acid.

It's a good start but I was listening to a talk show about knife crime and a surgeon who has helped many stab victims said that banning knives won't stop the problem. There are so many ordinary household items that can cause worse injuries than knives. Screwdrivers were mentioned.

It will be difficult for shops to keep track of every item than can be deemed corrosive. They will have to set something up in their system to flag it at the till.

The other issue is that adults also carry out these attacks. I cannot understand the mentality of people doing this.

I don't think most of those sell the acids anyway, we occasionally use acid to clear urinals but it is not generally available in supermarkets. Caustic soda can also be a very nasty chemical and that is easier to get hold of.

Re: Buying Acid.

There should be exemplary punishments for anyone carrying out an attack with acid - I mean like 10 years or something.

Too easy to get hold of even in corner shops, and of course online.

Re: Buying Acid.

Totally agree Ffosse until laws are changed and penaltys for carrying dangerous weapons are harder like more prison time nothing will stop this kind of thing.
But as usual in most cases British law is far to soft.

Re: Buying Acid.

Like so many 'weapons' those who really want to get hold of them seem to do so .
If nothing else it sends out the right message and it may prevent some of the 'copy cat ' attacks by the young who will just use the easiest obtainable corrosive substance that comes to hand.
