Re: Childhood Pet?
My dog Trixie and her son Rusty. Trixie was our first family dog and was a wonderful girl - Heinz 57 with a large dash of border collie. Her son Rusty was very much my dog and went everywhere with me from age 8 to 18. My best memories of him were in the icy winter of 1962/3 (I think) when it snowed on Boxing Day and the temperature never went above zero until the end of March. I built my own sled and got the long suffering Rusty to pull me down the frozen wastes of Salt Hill Park in Slough. I was reading Jack London at the time and a combination of Call of the Wild and Rusty's sled dog efforts started me down the road of sled dog ownership in later life. A dozen Siberian Huskies later - it is all Rusty's fault!!!! (and Jack London's).Re: Childhood Pet?
I will always remember Della. She was a beautiful black and pale gold German Shepherd. We had just moved up from London and I was a lonely child, shy and a complete fish out of water. Della came into my life (thanks to my dad) and she became my "best" friend. I discovered the freedom to roam and we had some great times exploring the woods and countryside together.Re: Childhood Pet?
My large semi-longhaired ginger cat! He was my best friend, comforted me thru childhood and teenage woes, and I loved him dearly. He was a great mouser and often had 3 or 4 lined up on the porch steps to show my mom. He went away at 18, probably up to the nearby woods where he hunted, although he hadn't seemed sick he was an old cat even by today's standards. And cats are amazingly good at hiding illness. So I have never had real closure even after all these years.Re: Childhood Pet?
Mick, That is a beautiful story of a boy and his dog.Re: Childhood Pet?
Aerolor, What a lovely name Della. And she gave you reassurance and courage when you needed it. (Good that you had a GSD with you in isolated areas)!!Re: Childhood Pet?
dandysmom, Scamper certainly defines a kitten. Isn't it funny how a name that suits a young animal, may not quite be ideal when adult. (Just as well you did not name him 'Tiny')
