Re: Communism, Socialism, Capitalism
Having been a radical communist in my youth, my ideal was always the type of communist society envisaged by Marx when he wrote of a society where,
“nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticize after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, shepherd or critic.”
In other words a society which takes,
“From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need”
Unfortunately, in practice, "communism" has meant the exact opposite - an ultra-authoritarian society with rigid state and party control. No "communist" state has ever come close to even desiring Marx' ideal society, let alone realising it, so I have to conclude that politically, communism is a dead duck.
What passes for "socialism" in our society (as characterised by The Labour Party) is simply capitalism with a (sort of) human face - although to be honest, under the appalling Blair, the mask slipped and New Labour were revealed as New Tories.
Capitalism is what we seem to be stuck with, but I still hanker for Marx' ideal society where one can be an individual yet still work for the benefit of all.
If forced to characterise myself politically I would describe myself as an anarcho-socialist libertarian Attilla the Hun only nice.
