Unity in Germany.

Today is a public holiday in Germany. It's "Tag der Deutschen Einheit" The day of German unity celebrating the reunion of west and east coming together again. Now I understand a bit better what happened in the election there's a certain irony to it all this year. Most of the votes for the Alternative for Deutschland party came from the old East Germany. The reason being that they don't feel like part of the one Germany. They have high unemployment which brings with it a lot of social issues. They've been ignored for years basicly by West Germany where all the money and jobs are. The AfD gave them a sympathetic ear. The AfD might not be a good thing but at least they've managed to embarrass the government on this.

A bit like the North in England Kev...Hence most of the votes to exit the EU came from the North of England, except for the rich and business areas i.e. Harrogate and Leeds.

Angela , the Chancellor grew up in East Germany, which would indicate her upbringing was not based on democracy. Do all these leaders clearly know what democracy is ? I fear not. In many cases only what 'their' countries managed to salvage as democracy , unlike our own. Now they wish to change democracy , according to their holy laws and pour water on our own. Maybe the East have not seen much change and who can blame them standing up for themselves, no one else will.

I'd never realized before just how bad it is in the East. It seems there're a lot of the poorer east European immigrants there and also refugees which are seeming to be more and more the forgotten political platform. The balance of unemployment between east and west is quite shocking.

I thought it had all changed now Kev, I used to deliver to just past a place called Coburg ( postfach 8630 ) back in the late 80s, which was just inside the old DDR, and it was like stepping into a different country, the roads were full of pot holes the houses were in a run down state and unpainted, the people looked downtrodden, and there was just a sense of decay and stagnation, I truly thought it has all changed by now with reunification.., you have surprised me, ...Eine Engischer L.K.V Fahrer or ( Arschloch ) in Deutche lol

Re: Unity in Germany.

I thought it had too Tom but after the election there were a lot of interviews done with the AfD politicians and also the voters on the streets. I was a bit shocked to see rubbish on the streets and broken down cars. There were quite noticeably homeless people wandering the streets. It seems that after the big celebration of the wall coming down over a period of years things cooled down. Industry had no interest to build in the east so there was no investment in infrastucture. Merkel in a post election news conference said that's it's time we listened to these people. It sort of sounded like she was talking about another country.

PD the East Germans did knock the wall down. They understand democracy better than we do.

They did in fact wish to shake off the Soviet Union and enjoy their hope of democracy.

How did the Russian troops take East Germany ? This should be a lesson to many (but it won't be).

On June 17, 1953 Soviet tanks rumbled through East Berlin to suppress a widespread protest against the German Democratic Republic’s capricious labor policies.( ruled by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany) workers’ strike had erupted in response to a mandate published in the labor union’s newspaper which demanded a 10% increase in industrial production without a commensurate wage hike. In response to this bold display of opposition, approximately 1 million people in 700 East German cities and towns joined the workers in voicing their displeasure with the government. Within 24 hours, East German police and Russian troops had successfully crushed the protest. Dozens lay murdered in the street and over 25,000 people had been incarcerated.

Re: Unity in Germany.

Hi

When I come back from Poland I sometimes come back as a passenger in the HGV.

They have a pick up in East Germany on an Industrial Estate, it is a right dump, and very depressing to see.
