Audience Clapping....Why?

I've watched a couple of tv shows recently that have had celebrity guests who have recently become a parent.....why oh why do the audience clap them when the host reveals this?

It reminds me of 70s flights abroad...passengers clapping the pilot for landing....as if it was unexpected, an achievement.

They were two blokes right? Hence the clapping, one had just given birth
