Stupid Drivers.

Hi

This is the time of the year when we get what we call the Birmingham Armada.

An entire fleet of caravans and boats being towed onto the coast for the weekend, often at stupid speeds.

We also have idiots racing each other along the M54 towards Mid Wales.

They have bets as to who gets there first.

Re: Stupid Drivers.

Having been a tugger for years it amazes me these days the speeds people try to go with vans on the back and the 75/ 25 rule seems to have been forgotten by everyone. I dread to think how they would get out of trouble with some rigs.

Re: Stupid Drivers.

Your caravan should never be more than 75 percent of the tow weight of the car, manufacturers set the weight at a safe but top level, so to tow safely you stick to less than 3/4 of the weight allowed. It's also safer not to have a caravan more than 25 percent bigger than the car height and length.

Re: Stupid Drivers.

Was 50 mph when we tugged. I think it may have gone up though as I see a lot with 60 on the rear these days.

60 on motorways and dual carriageways, 50 on single carriageway roads where National speed limit applies and the marked speed on other roads....

As Julie says overall weight ratio is very important, but for maximum stability then also correct loading of the trailer is of paramount importance, which should allow around 50 to 60kg of the trailer weight onto the tow ball to ensure safe traction for the towing vehicle with good towing balance for the trailer.

Re: Stupid Drivers.

Yes worries me when I see back heavy vans almost picking up the car that's towing them.

Re: Stupid Drivers.

I have always wanted a tower but my Micra, being only a 1.2, isn't strong enough for pulling large weights. I'd have to change over to a bigger car with a bigger engine, to even consider it. But that won't happen because I love this car and it performs well.

Should anything happen, and touch wood and fingers crossed nothing will for years yet, I have always hankered after a Ford Focus.

Blimey Julie. You sound like a trucker.
