Hedgehog in the snow

My smallest Jack Russell (Lilly)is deaf. She is spoiled and very smart. But she can smell hedgehog in the middle of the night a mile off.
Last week in the coldest night(3.30a.m) of the bad weather she woke me and insisted on taking a turn in the garden. And returned with a large hedgehog which she deposited on the living room carpet.
So I got my gardering gloves and returned our little visitor back into the garden. When the cold hit me I realised hedgehogs should be in hibernation. I couldn't go back to my warm bed leaving this little thing to freeze.
I gave the hedghog a bed of fresh hay, a supper of cat food and some warm milk, and kept it untill the weather warmed snug in a box.
So last night I returned the beastie to the wild. Put the box out in the garden with it's door open.
4.30 a.m this morning we had an encore.
Happy days

How sweet! I'm so pleased you gave the hedgehog some warmth and comfort in such chilly weather, you no doubt saved its life...... well done!

Brilliant Lilly, hedgehogs need all the protection that they can get. They are almost blind and get around by smelling their way so a little love and guidance really helps them.

Re: Hedgehog in the snow

Any hedgehog which is mad enough to enter our property will almost inevitably end up as a football with our two dogs They make such a noise when they find one that I know what's going on.

OH insists that I go outside and rescue the little creature. This involves me in coaxing it onto a spade and walking half a mile down the road to deposit it in the undergrowth near the creek. The last time I did this was 5:30 in the morning and I only had time to put on my dressing gown luckily only our local farmer went down the road and he probably thought 'Oh it's just that crazy English man'

Absolutely true DM Half a mile might seem like a bit far but the first year we were here I used to put them just outside the fence, guess what.............the next day they were back in the garden and the dogs were playing football again somehow I don't think hedgehogs are the brains of the animal world

Re: Hedgehog in the snow

Lovely stories here. Now I really want a hedgehog or two in my garden, have done for years and cannot coax one to come and live here. So does my neighbour and we have made a couple of hedgehog size holes in our fences so they could go about their travels. Has anyone any hints for me?
