Why?

I don't know what made me wonder about this, but why do we call female authoress - "Authoress" yet female writers are not called - "Writeress"?

I have never heard of an authoress, both sexes are called authors!

Oh, I always refer to all authors as .... authors and as for authoresses - I can hardly say it! Barmy!!

Yes Mups I have heard them called authoress, but I now have another question!
We call the male a man, so why weren't we called maness instead of woman?
