Positioning nesting boxes for wild birds.

When positioning a nesting box for wild birds do you face it in any particular direction.

The prevailing wind here is SW so placing it in that direction would allow rain to get in. Maybe south is best, any fledgelings should have flown before the sun gets too hot .

Thanks Mups I was going to look it up but wondered if anyone had any tried and tested preferences.

I am going to put one box on the apple tree for small birds.
I would also like to put a box for Wrens, I have a couple in the garden and will hide it in foliage.

My son's house has a place for bats to enter a special loft to roost, I wonder if any birds will find and use it too ..
