Are You Comfortable?

My friend and husband in their 60’s are busy spending as much money as they can on long holidays and all kinds of gadgets they do not need so they can get a Council House or Flat and get all the State Benefits they can, and not be penalised for working hard and saving money.

They have had their name on the housing list for some time
I do not agree with this waste of money, and you can still get some help even with savings as well.

It is a mater of pride too. If you have saved to live comfortably, why live off the State?
Their reasoning is why should people who have never worked hard or saved a penny get everything they possibly can free?

Re: Are You Comfortable?

It's not really a waste if they are enjoying life while they can. I think it's scandalous that people have to pay for care with their house, when those who have spent everything don't. The system is unfair to the old and getting unfairer every year.

Horses for courses although I suspect they may regret it a little down the line especially if something happens to one of them.

I've never been one to live for today and worry about tomorrow when it comes and I don't see that changing any time soon either.

Edit: Under no circumstances would I want to be housed by the council after living in this lovely flat with such a gorgeous outlook. Where are they going to end up? They have no control over that, do they?

I understand their reasoning. Some of today's society are free loaders and are parasites who are living on the backs of the tax payer. The true socialist ethic would be to pay into a society, reap the benefits and help those who can't help themselves. It's just a free for all now, with all and sundry taking advantage.

Don't know why some folks are so pre-occupied with what other folks are up to, you've just got to do what you have to everyday, to get by, nowt else matters.Imo

Re: Are You Comfortable?

Anyone who purposely makes themselves eligible for social housing must be mad!
When they actually have to live in it they may realise what a mistake they've made.
I've had to rely on social housing since my last marriage broke up.
You don't get to choose where you live, you take what you're given. You can't make any alterations, you're constantly reminded that'll you are living in someone else's property and those around you can be very unpleasant.
As for care homes, why not live more comfortably on the money you've earned?
There is a difference between those who pay and those who are funded.
My daughter's friend works in a care home where the staff have to raise funds so that the state funded old folk can join the better off ones on trips etc.
When I was young all I heard from older people was that they were investing in property and saving for their old age, yet when they get old they don't want to use it.
Houses are being left empty to avoid paying for care, that is a bigger sin to me than being poor.

Good post TessA, the reason why folks need to graft, as long as they can.

Re: Are You Comfortable?

It's all very sobering
It's hard to spend money after a life time of thrift .
My father spent all his life working hard and saving it but he never spent it at the end of his life . I wish that he had and been comfortable .

Re: Are You Comfortable?

It's not so comfortable now for the elderly living in local authority housing on benefits many are asked( told )to downsize or face fines . There's a bidding system ...you are required to bid on a given number of properties regardless of style or location within a certain time or you are penalised financially .
