If YOU were the president of the US

If You were the President of the USA and terrorists managed to explode a nuclear bomb on American soil what would your reaction be? Assume that the terrorists had definite, known links with a particular Middle Eastern Country.

Would you tell your people to rise above it and that the only way to beat terrorism is to carry on as normal?

OR

Would you unleash a dozen nuclear missiles?

I would get to the nuclear bunker with a crate of whisky, switch my phone off and pray it is sorted out peacefully by my head of defence. The reality would be retaliation and WWIII.

Article 5 of the NATO defence treaty would require a response from all NATO countries, so it would be interesting to see who would respond now that the Donald is charge.

I think I would be concentrating my efforts on helping those still alive but injured and asking NATO for a response.

I asked this question because I am currently watching '24' (again) and it has happened in the programme. A known terrorist group has detonated a nuclear suitcase bomb in LA, instantly killing 12,000 people with the fall out affecting many more. There are another five attacks planned for that day.

The president wants the American people to remain calm but his military staff wants him to retaliate by nuking several Middle Eastern countries. The programme cleverly makes the case for both sides of the argument.

I've never watched that but the people nuked were likely innocents and the idea of nuking another country in retaliation would kill more innocents. I'm not a violent person but I'd favour killing the government that nuked my country not the innocent people who have no choice in his their government behave.

I doubt it will ever happen, surely the human race is too sensible to do it but if it does I will have to join AnnieS in her bunker with my Baileys and Jelly Babies
