1957

According to researchers, they have decided that 1957 was the "Happiest Year in a Century."

I have no idea how they reached this conclusion, the report didn't say.

For those of us a certain age, can you remember what you were doing, and where you were in 1957?

I remember it well, it was the year my Dad married my stepmother, a miserable year for me .

I was ten, living in Folkestone on the Kent coast, did a lot of swimming and roller skating, for our holidays we went to Butlins.

That's about all I can remember but I am damn sure I have had much happier years than that.

1957

I was coming to terms with the death of my little sister - she was buried on Christmas eve 1956. Was at Grammar school and questioning my religion (I was brought up RC) which did not go down well with the powers that be!

Discovered the wonder and magic that was Tolkien - which led me to become a lifelong devotee of his excellent poetry and stories.

Spent the summer holiday at home in Ireland with my Grandparents - bliss !!

In 1957, I was 12, living in Brisbane and had sold my first short-story.
My current wife was busy being born.

Re: 1957

I was three years old at the time.

To be honest I would say 1957 wasn't very remarkable for most people at the time.

There would still have been strong feeling and sentiment about the second world war, maybe there was a collective sigh of relief to have it so firmly behind everyone.

Rationing was well over and a rebuilding of sorts was well under way.

No .. when's the next one due or I have got to live to be a centenarian? I've always had this vague longing and feeling that something was missing from my life and now I know.
