The winter sun

Why is it that the winter sun coming through the windscreen always seems more blinding than the summer sun?

Some say it is because it's lower in the sky. Would you agree with that?
Sometimes when I am driving and then just turn a corner - wham - it's right in my eyes, and being vertically challenged, the wretched car's sun visa's are never long enough!

That's another thing I have no doubt that men are responsible for -
stupid design sun visors in cars!

Hi

Yes, you are quite right Mups, it is the angle of the sun.

The best way to avoid the issue if you are vertically challenged is to drive everywhere in reverse.

Hi

Being serious for a change, polaroid sunglasses are best answer,

Making sure your windscreen is clean also helps, it avoids scatter.

Re: The winter sun

Hi

Scatter is glare, the type you get at night when some prat has their main beams on.

The dust on your windscreen splits the light up and dazzles you.

It isn't just your windscreen either, it is an age problem.

The human eye is quite good at resolving high-contrast situations. A single bright headlight may dazzle, but the eye is still quite good at seeing detail in the darker background. But if that single point of light is scattered (dirty screen, dirt/mist on inside, raindrops, smears, dirty specs, ageing eyeballs) then instead of a single point of bright light you have a million points of light scattered across your vision. This reduces the ability to see detail in the darker areas, where there might be a pedestrian or cyclist, or debris in the road. Reducing the light scatter is the key. And being 20 again, I suppose.

Ah, I see (no pun intended). Yes, I'm sure being 20 again would be a big help. I've got anti-glare lenses in my driving specs and my sun glasses, but still get dazzled, so I guess I'm just getting decrepid then.

I just wish someone would design a sort of extending bit we could pull down on the visors though. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate that. It could be there as an option, and wouldn't have to be used if not necessary.
Something like a mini 'blind' that we could pull down to get an extra couple of inches shade, then let it ping back up afterwards.
