Why do it?

Ok i know some people have to get credit to make ends meet but surely there is no need for anyone to be so stupid as to end up thousands of pounds in debt for years just to have a holiday in the sun. Think i would rather have a holiday in a caravan by the sea over here than end up deep in debt for years just for a couple of weeks in the sun crazy or what? Could it be keeping up with the Jones's?

Re: Why do it?

I can't give you an answer only that only way we got out of debt was by simplifying our lives and not believing the idea we had to have things just because everyone else did. We camped, caravanned, etc for holidays as that was cheaper, we've been laughed at, looked down on etc by people because we lived like that but we feel sorry for them when they get the bills after their marvellous trips.

Re: Why do it?

It's the same with weddings , why do young couples spend thousands and get into debt for one day .
Half of them won't still be together when they finish paying of the debt .

It's a different world from the one in which we grew up Doc where credit and debt were dirty words that held connotations of the workhouse.

That's very true we've always had a feeling of shame when we had to borrow and it's been important to pay every penny back as soon as we could. But many don't feel like that.

Re: Why do it?

Daughter wanted to take children to lapland overnight to see santa as her brother works for the airline he had concessions due and offered to go with her and the girls . This would bring the cost down considerably , or so they thought . Total cost came to £2,500 overnight even with his concessions . Naturally they decided against it . Yet my son tells me the regular flights are constantly full . We wonder how can families afford this trip yet we know many who go .

Happy to say we don't owe anybody anything.

Mortgage free years ago plus a home in the sun.

As we spend nearly all the time here. Two top of the range cars gone. It's easier to hire when you need and no up keep costs.

Very happy with life.

It's crazy isn't it we are just looking at a school trip that tbh we are very loathe to say yes to because we can get three weeks groceries for the cost of a five day trip !

Re: Why do it?

Same with the idiots getting in debt because they want a poser car " Ooooh! Look what im driving" Good luck to them if that's what they want but why get hugely in debt just to have a heap of metal parked outside your house.

Mind without those idiots the world would be poorer, they buy the goods everyone makes. No one would get rich off my meagre purchases
