Forums and emails

Hi

In connection to social forums such as OFF, can anyone say that if any members can receive the posts by email ? If so , with emails being instant, does that mean any post a person makes and then deletes or changes, has or can been seen anyway, by those who receive the posts by email ?

I would think so. Nowadays I don't e-mail anyone I have only met on forums, and prefer not to send or receive pms either. Once bitten twice shy!

Re: Forums and emails

so for example, you make a post on the sports thread, and is picked up by ANY member who receives posts via email. (for example , myself) You change your mind and delete the post, but I will have already seen the one you deleted and didn't post on the forum.

There is a bit of a hoo -haa going on another forum for this same issue. I was just wondering if the same 'facility' (i.e. receiving members posts on topics by email) is used on here.

p.s. I don't receive posts by email.....just so you know I'm not spying. Wouldn't know how to anyway.

I knew someone who was constantly receiving email notification from posts on here, facebook and other sites. That would have driven me nuts but some people lead strange lives. No idea if, when a post has been deleted, the notification would cease.

Hi PD I think you are refering to the emails received should a member wish to subscribe to a thread.

The first reply a member makes is the one you will see in the subscription email . You should not see any edits made subsequent to their first reply in the email.

Why would you want to receive e-mail notifications that someone had posted on a forum ? Your e-mail 'in box' would get clogged up quicker than you could say SPAM

If you are following a thread then just go to it to see who has posted since your last visit, surely that is the logical thing to do.

I have taken on board that the OP is trying to settle a dispute on another forum which is fine except that there's no standards in the internet forum world and the rules for OFF might well NOT apply on this other forum

Lol ... some people have problems and feel the need to know if their posts/threads have attracted attention.

Many individuals have physical or mental problems and these chat sites (or porno sites lol) are ones they frequent because they are unable to function in 'real' life.

Then you get the 'Trolls, Bullies and Paranoid individuals' (in the news yet again today) who will use the internet to satisfy their need to confront, argue etc whilst staying behind the safety of their keyboards.

Re: Forums and emails

I do get an email of a notification of posts by others of a topic that I have subscribed to. I have subscribed to many topics and if I did not get a notification, I would not know that someone has added a post to the subject,
Yea I know I have a sad life.

Lol

I think I get notifications of PMs and that's all.

The person I knew, was getting notifications popping up on their TV sometimes every other minute (computer plugged into it). A complete nuisance IMO. especially if they HAD to reply immediately .... sheeeesh !

Yes Meg, that's seems to sound right. So someone has to subscribe to have that facility.
It's a bit suspect isn't it ?

Just imagine if a person posted a really inflammatory post about anther person and decided to remove it. because it was OTT. Too late I suspect and that could lead to all sorts of nasty problems.

Thanks for the replies folks.
